Mr. Donald Miley has retired from the Library Board after nearly 19 years.  Mr. Miley has been an outstanding board member and was the longest-serving member of the board.

At the Police Jury meeting on May 9, Mr. Wade Riley, the justice of the peace in Pine Prairie, was selected as Mr. Miley’s replacement.

The Library Board and staff salute Mr. Miley for his many years of wonderful service, and we welcome Mr. Riley to the Board.

Due to the All Staff Summer Reading Workshop, the main library (Ville Platte) and all branches will be closed except for their after school hours on Wednesday May 11.  The main library will open at 2:30 p.m. and all branches will open at 3 p.m.

The staff will be preparing for Summer Reading.  Early registration for Summer Reading begins May 23rd.  The first day to be able to get prizes is Wednesday, June 1st.   We hope everybody will have a great summer with the library!

With 59 of 59 precincts reporting, the voter turnout was 5.6%.  Of 1,247 voters voting, 1,128 (90%) voted Yes for the library property tax continuation, and 119 (10%) voted No.

The library would like to thank everybody who voted on this issue, regardless of whether you voted Yes or No.   Thank you for caring about your library system and its future and for letting your vote count.

The proposition passed in every precinct (3 precincts had no voters).  In precincts where there was voter turnout, the lowest pass rate was 67% in two precincts.  The proposition passed by 100% in 21 of the 59 precincts. In the remaining 26 precincts, the proposition passed with from 70% to 98% of the votes cast.

Again, thank you!

Voting is at the regular polling places throughout the parish.  All registered parish voters are eligible to vote:  this is the one and only tax to fund the entire library system ( the main library in Ville Platte and the five branch libraries in Mamou, Basile, Chataignier, Pine Prairie, and Turkey Creek).  There is no other tax that funds the main library or any other part(s) of the library system.  For more information, please click on the “Tax Election” icon to the right of this message, or call 363-1369 (main library) or the branch nearest you.

Early voting for continuation of the property tax that funds the library system will be held throughout this week at the courthouse, except for Friday April 22nd (courthouse closed for Good Friday).  If you’re a property owner, you are already paying the millage requested in the tax proposition.*  For more information about the tax and how it is used by the library, please click on the “Tax Election” icon to the right of this message.

*  Millages undergo slight adjustments during the years of a tax due to changes in property values and increases or decreases in tax revenues.  For more information about millage calculations and how and when millages may be adjusted during the years of a tax, please contact the tax assessor’s office.
