At the library for May 1, 2022

The Evangeline Parish Board of Control and the staff would like to extend an invitation to our patrons to drop by the main library in Ville Platte on Wednesday, May 4^th, from 10 am to noon to say farewell to our retiring Director, Yvonne Lavergne. (Please note that  all branch libraries will be closed until noon to attend the event). In case you didn’t get a chance to get to know Yvonne, here’s a little background: Our retiring director, Eniweta Yvonne Lavergne, got her unusual first name from her father’s service in the Navy in the Marshall Islands where “Eniwetok Atoll” is remembered as the site of the first H-bomb testing in 1952. Yvonne spent most of her childhood in California due to her father’s naval career and stayed in the area for 32 years working in the banking industry in San Diego. She retired as an Assistant Vice President of Union Bank where she managed the Employee Loan Department. She also spent two years after her retirement from Union Bank as a Consumer Loan Underwriter for another financial institution. In 2003 she moved to Louisiana with her husband, Leon Lavergne, to his hometown of Mamou. There they built their home and became active with family, church, and community. Always one to want to help others, Yvonne delivered meals to shut-ins for two years for the Evangeline Parish Council on Aging Meals on Wheels program. Then in2008 an opportunity arose to work at the Evangeline Parish Library where she excelled in the many roles that she played. In October 2011 she became the library’s business manager and soon began to work toward her American Library Association Library Support Staff Certification which she completed it in 2015. (This is a national accreditation recognized by all public libraries in the United States). Then in December 2019 Yvonne was named Director for the Evangeline Parish Library system and has served the parish well. We suspect that she will enjoy her retirement by traveling the country from the East coast where her daughter’s family, grandchildren and great-grandchild live to the West coast here she grew up keeps in touch with many old friends.
