The Library Board of Control will hold a public hearing on Wed., Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m. to receive public comment on the proposed 2010 Operating and Sinking Fund budget amendments and on the initial 2011 budget. The hearing will be at the main library.
The Board’s meeting originally scheduled for Dec. 14 has been rescheduled for Dec. 15 at 4 p.m., following the public budget hearing. An agenda will be posted at the main library no later than Monday Dec. 13. Public attendance and comments are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
The Turkey Creek and Chataignier branch libraries will start closing at 5 p.m., beginning the week of Nov. 22nd.
Turkey Creek will not close for lunch, and Chataigner will open one half hour earlier than previously.
Meet the Author: Sat. Oct. 30th from 8:30 to 11:30 at the main library, W. Joseph Dupuis will talk about his book, The Other Side of the Clouds, and sign copies. Joe, now a resident of Virginia, was one of a family of seven children of Leroy and Alix Dupuis and was brought up just outside of Ville Platte. He learned to fly and had a varied and exciting career, which he recounts in his book. Everybody is welcome.
Free computer courses for adults (age 16 and over): These FREE one day training sessions are offered by the State Library and are funded through a BroadbandUSA grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Trainings will be offered during the following weeks:
Week of Oct. 18-22: Computer Foundations
Week of Nov. 1-5: Microsoft Word, Level 1
Week of Nov. 15-19: Resume Building and Beyond
Week of Nov. 29-Dec. 3: Microsoft Excel 2007, Level 1
NOTE: Pine Prairie trainings Mondays, Basile Tuesdays, Mamou Wednesdays, Turkey Creek Thursdays, and Ville Platte Fridays for all classes. Classes are full day, 9 to 5, for ages 16 and up. Sorry, nobody under 16.
To register: Call the State Library at 1-888-487-2700 or register online at lajacc.state.lib.la.us/training. You may also register by calling your local library, but callers to the state number and online registrants have priority, and space is going fast, with some sections of classes already taking standby waiting list registrants only.
Family Book and Culture Fest is Sat., Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ville Platte North Side Civic Center.
Admission is free. Inside the Civic Center enjoy performers, meet local authors, visit nonprofit information booths, and shop the Friends of the Library huge book sale and hot dog booth. Outside the Civic Center, visit our farmer’s market and community yard sale vendors. Door prizes are coupons good for shopping at booths throughout the event.
